'ADVANCEing STEM Faculty' topic for symposium

The annual Distinguished Women in Science Lecture Series, presented by the , is coming in the form of a half-day symposium this year, 鈥淎DVANCEing STEM Faculty at 新澳门六合彩内幕信息 Davis.鈥

ADVANCE is a National Science Foundation program to boost the participation of women and underrepresented minorities in academic STEM careers: science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

With a , 新澳门六合彩内幕信息 Davis has established its own ADVANCE Program 鈥 one that focuses in particular on increasing the representation of Latinas in STEM.

新澳门六合彩内幕信息 Davis ADVANCE is co-sponsoring next week's symposium: 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday (April 25) in Ballroom A at the Activities and Recreation Center.

The organizers said the symposium, for faculty, administrators and students, will address the national imperative for a diverse STEM faculty, the role the NSF ADVANCE Program plays in meeting that challenge, and the specific aims of the 新澳门六合彩内幕信息 Davis ADVANCE Program.

Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi, principal investigator for 新澳门六合彩内幕信息 Davis ADVANCE, will give the keynote address: 鈥淎dvancing STEM Research Through Diversity.鈥 The program also includes two panels.

The first panel, 鈥淣SF ADVANCE: Goals, Impact and Future,鈥 comprises one 新澳门六合彩内幕信息 Davis professor (who serves as a vice provost at the 新澳门六合彩内幕信息 Office of the President), and professors from the universities of Michigan and Maryland. The panelists and their topics:

  • Abigail Stewart 鈥 鈥淭he History, Goals and impact of NSF ADVANCE.鈥 Stewart is a professor of psychology and women鈥檚 studies, and director of ADVANCE at the University of Michigan.
  • Susan Carlson 鈥 鈥淭he Investment NSF ADVANCE Has Made in 新澳门六合彩内幕信息.鈥 Carlson is vice provost of Academic Personnel, 新澳门六合彩内幕信息 Office of the President, and a professor of English, 新澳门六合彩内幕信息 Davis; and principal investigator on the NSF ADVANCE grant 鈥淢eeting the California Challenge.
  • Ruth Zambrana 鈥 鈥淗istorically Underrepresented Minority Women in the Academy: An Essential Focus for NSF ADVANCE.鈥 Zambrana is a professor of women鈥檚 studies, and director of the Consortium on Race, Gender and Ethnicity at the University of Maryland, College Park.

The second panel, 鈥淎DVANCE Institutional Transformation at 新澳门六合彩内幕信息 Davis,鈥 comprises three 新澳门六合彩内幕信息 Davis faculty members, two of whom are administrators. The panelists and their topics:

  • Kimberlee Shauman 鈥 鈥淭he State of STEM Faculty at 新澳门六合彩内幕信息 Davis.鈥 Shauman is a professor of sociology.
  • Adela de la Torre 鈥 鈥淭he Importance of the Focus on Latinas.鈥 De la Torre is interim vice chancellor, Student Affairs, and a professor of Chicana/o studies.
  • Maureen Stanton 鈥 鈥溞掳拿帕喜誓谀恍畔 Davis ADVANCE Goals and Primary Initiatives.鈥 She is vice provost, Academic Affairs, and a professor of evolution and ecology.
