Weekender: Art Tour, More Music, and Don't Forget Thomas' Final Concert

Art Studio Visiting Artists Series presents Kevin B. Chen Thursday; leads a tour Friday

On Thursday, on June 7, 4:30-6 p.m. in the Manetti Shrem Museum鈥檚 Community Education Room at 新澳门六合彩内幕信息 Davis, Bay Area artist Kevin B. Chen will speak. He has been involved in the Bay Area arts community for more than two decades as a curator, writer, and visual artist.

He currently serves as faculty at San Francisco State University鈥檚 School of Art and at Stanford University鈥檚 Department of Art and Art History, a member of Recology鈥檚 Artist in Residence Program Advisory Board, and a Curatorial Committee member of Root Division and Pro Arts Gallery. Chen鈥檚 work has exhibited locally at San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, Southern Exposure, Palo Alto Art Center, Jack Fischer Gallery, and nationally at Angel鈥檚 Gate Cultural Center in San Pedro; Harn Museum of Art in Gainesville, Florida and others.

The next day, (Friday) Chen and the the graduating MFAs will lead a walk-through of the 鈥2018 Arts and Humanities Graduate Exhibition鈥 at the Manetti Shrem Museum. The tour will run from 12:30-2:30 p.m. in the galleries and courtyard, focusing on the works of the Art Studio graduates. Participating in the tour along with Chen will be arts and humanities graduate exhibitors Noah Greene, Tavarus Blackmonster, Ryan Meyer, Doug Loree, Jodi Connelly, Emily Clark-Kramer and Joy Miller. And while you鈥檙e at the museum, check out the front windows and other art completed recently by Professor Susette Min鈥檚 students.

Ensemble featured in noon concert Thursday

And, no Thursday is complete without a nod to the free Shinkoskey Noon Concert. This Thursday, at noon (12:05 p.m., to be exact), go to the Pitzer Center and check out the Hindustani Vocal Ensemble, Rita Sahai, director. Sahai, an acclaimed composer, performer and teacher, tours throughout the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and India. She is also in demand at recording studios at home and abroad, where she graciously lends her voice to many diverse musical projects, including contributing vocal tracks for Grammy Award-winning artist B茅la Fleck and performing on Alonzo King鈥檚 Sacred Texts, a CD of international music that won the Isadora Duncan Award for music excellence. She has also collaborated on several live musical productions with Jennifer Berezan鈥檚 鈥淓dge of Wonder鈥 project.

TANA opens new exhibition Friday

Taller Arte del Amanacer, which is Spanish for Art Workshop of the New Dawn, founded and run by the Department of Chicana/o Studies in 2009, opens 鈥淣ew Seeds/Semillas Nuevas鈥 鈥 Recent posters by TANA interns and workshop participants. Opening 5-7 p.m. Friday, June 8, TANA, 1224 Lemen Ave., Woodland.

鈥淎rte Cura: Silkscreen Prints from Taller Arte del Nuevo Amanecer鈥 鈥 Opening 5:30-7 p.m. Friday, June 15, Communicare/Davis Community Gallery, 2051 John Jones Road, Davis. The art center in Woodland encourages the community to explore and represent Chicano culture through silk-screening, mural painting and other classes.

Lisa Rybovich Crall茅, MFA 2011, will return to 鈥淩elay鈥 at Mills College鈥檚 Slide Space for an exhibition calendared for Friday, June 8, through June 29. Mills College, Oakland.
