C-STEM Center Offers Webinars, Professional Development for Math Teachers

The аÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÄÚÄ»ÐÅÏ¢ Davis C-STEM Center is moving its professional development opportunities for teachers online this summer. The center is also offering a series of webinars on using robotics to teach mathematics and other subjects. (C-STEM Center)

As schools, parents and students grapple with how to recover from the pandemic, the Center for Integrated Computing and STEM Education at the University of California, Davis, is offering free webinars and online professional development for teachers.

The C-STEM Engaged Learning Spotlight webinar series, from 11 to 11:30 a.m. every Tuesday, will highlight experience and accomplishments with the C-STEM Program. Teachers and administrators share their work and outcomes.

May 19: Kenneth Wagner, associate superintendent, and Deepika Srivastava, STEAM and innovation coordinator, Redlands Unified School District, will discuss how they have incorporated C-STEM in grades six-10 to enhance math teaching and provide alternative experiences for students who do not thrive in a traditional math classroom.

May 26: Principal Joe Erven and third-grade teacher Greg Miller, McPherson Magnet School, Orange Unified School District, will talk about the implementation of C-STEM robotics at a STEM focused K-eighth grade magnet school. The school has seen a 72 percent increase in the number of students meeting or exceeding third-grade math SBAC standards over the past four years.

Summer Professional Development

C-STEM is transitioning to online professional development for summer 2020. Teachers can learn how to better engage their students in math, computer science and other STEM subjects through coding and robotics.

  

This summer academy is designed to provide teachers from kindergarten through grade six with the knowledge and experience to incorporate hands-on and interactive activities in their daily classroom curriculum. It will guide teachers through supporting their students as they learn math, art, music and science by demonstrating concepts and ideas through coding and robotics. No prior experience required.

There will be five three-hour sessions: 1-4 p.m. July 6-10, and 8:30-11:30 a.m. Aug. 3-7.

 

This intensive summer institute is designed to provide professional development for K-14 teachers on bringing learning to life. Participants will gain first-hand experience on robotics, coding and physical computing and how to integrate them into STEM classes. No prior experience necessary.

The course comprises 10 three-hour sessions:

  • 1-4 p.m. June 15-26
  • 8:30-11:30 a.m. July 6-17
  • 1-4 p.m. July 20-31

 

This workshop provides professional development for K-14 teachers on electronic circuits, sensors, and their applications with robotics and physical computing.

Five three-hour sessions will be held from 8:30-11:30 a.m. July 27-31.
