Updated 2 p.m. June 5: After lackluster response for delivery and pickup options through the website Grubhub, the Coffee House is suspending operations through the summer, hoping to reopen once students return.
“We just haven’t gotten much traction with the concept and assume that the summer won’t be any better,” said Darin Schluep, director of the CoHo. “We thought it would be best to focus our efforts on preparing for fall quarter so we can put our best foot forward if/when the students return to campus.”
Scrubs Cafe remains open for to-go orders.
Updated 10 a.m. May 19: joined the Coffee House this week in reopening with limited service. The eatery in the Health Sciences District is now offering pre-made food for takeout orders only. Peet’s Coffee, breakfast burritos and sandwiches are among its offerings.
Face coverings are required to enter Scrubs Café, which is open from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. on weekdays.
Update, 8 a.m. May 15: About two dozen customers got their Coffee House fix yesterday, on the eatery’s first day offering delivery and pickup through the app Grubhub, and staff are ready to handle more.
“We did 25 orders today, so it was a steady, manageable first day, but we are definitely looking for the business to grow from here,” said Darin Schluep, director of the CoHo.
The very first order of the day went to the home of Andy Wyly, maintenance manager for Unitrans. He counts himself as a “big fan” of the CoHo.
“I was very eager to jump at the opportunity to find a way to support them again,” Wyly said. “Plus, who can’t turn down a hot chai tea latte delivered straight to my front door?”
He also ordered a couple of breakfast burritos, plus a cookie for his 7-year-old, and said he was satisfied with the quick delivery.
Breakfast burritos, personal pizzas, coffee and more: Campus and city residents will be able to get Coffee House favorites delivered to their doors through the website Grubhub starting this Thursday (May 14).
The CoHo, which has been closed since March 18, will offer food for delivery on campus or in the city of Davis, or pickup on the patio.
“We assume we will make adjustments based on volume and requests we get for additional menu items,” said Darin Schluep, director of the CoHo, a unit of the AS°ϲĻϢD. “We’ll be taking input and requests via our email and will be happy to expand the menu if demand warrants it.”
The CoHo will be open for orders through Grubhub, which imposes a 59-cent surcharge, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays. Orders will require a $5 minimum. Download the app for or devices and look for the CoHo under the “°ϲĻϢD Campus” tab.
Student workers and career staff held a series of “trial runs” in recent weeks, with Schluep writing out orders for the various stations in the CoHo and staff fulfilling them. Now, around a dozen student cooks will be back at work and ready for the real thing.
