More than 200 people turned out Friday night (June 23) for the third annual аÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÄÚÄ»ÐÅÏ¢ Davis Staff and Faculty Brewing Competition, where two sets of judges — professionals and everyone else — picked the winners:
The professional judges picked the Here for Beer entry as top stout and best of show. All three team members — Jared Duncan, lead, Ryan Duncan and Nick Harden — work in Utilities, Jared in water and gas; his twin, Ryan, in the machine shop; and Nick in instrumentation and controls. As winner of best of show, they won the opportunity to work with the head brew master at Three Mile Brewing Co. to produce the winning beer and have it sold at Three Mile in downtown Davis.
In this year’s other category, amber, the judges named Amalgam Brewing Co.’s entry the best. The team: Kevin Vellanoweth, team lead, of Finance, Operations and Administration; Juan Olloqui, Anthony Shriver and Ian Wright, all of IET Enterprise Applications and Infrastructure Services; Roderick Read ’07 (a brewing graduate); and Michael Sierra of the School of Education.
The People’s Choice awards went to Here for Beer for stout and Stuck in the Middle for amber, produced by Guerren Solbach, team lead, Stacey Bianco, Patty Covington, Linda Fairfield, Janette Manuel, Michael Tyler and Emi Manning, all of Human Resources; and Rich Shintaku of Student Affairs.
The best label award — also decided by popular vote — went to a stout named Covfefe, produced by Jacob Kitada, team lead, of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering; Ben Clark, Ken Jones and Steve Pigg, all of the College of Engineering; Ken Gribble of the Department of Computer Science; and Noah Killeen of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
