Health and Well-Being Classes for Spring

Staff and faculty and invited to enroll in ‘Biking With Confidence’ classes this spring.

The this spring is offering meditation and tai chi programs, and partnering with other units on “Biking With Confidence” classes and a workshop on “how to better navigate interpersonal relations in the workplace.” All programs are free.

‘Biking With Confidence’

Presented in collaboration with Transportation Services, which runs the campus Bike Program, this four-week series of lunchtime classes is for people who are rusty riders as well as those who are proficient on their pedals. The instructors, certified by the League of American Bicyclists and who also teach courses for city of Davis, will cover the rules of the road, provide hands-on training in bike maintenance, and offer tips and tricks to help you integrate biking into your daily life.

Four classes are planned, each with a different topic, on four consecutive Thursdays:

  • April 13 — Rules of the Road, learn how to bike on the street, how to navigate intersections, how to avoid crashes and what laws apply to you as a cyclist.
  • April 20 — Bike Maintenance, learn how to take care of your bike by fixing a flat, keeping your chain and brakes healthy, and making your bike more comfortable to ride. Bring your bike (optional) for hands-on training.
  • April 27 — Biking Tips and Tricks for commuting, shopping, biking with kids and riding in the rain.
  • May 4 — Hit the Road! Bring your bike and your helmet and put your skills to the test, with a fun and informative bike ride.

‘Do You Play Nice With Others?’

This one-hour class will offer information on how to understand other people’s personality types, to help us work more harmoniously, leveraging the strengths of co-workers and teammates while better navigating areas of conflict.

The class is scheduled from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, in the Emergency Operations Center in the .

Instructor: Jane Anastos, predoctoral psychology intern at ASAP. She has a master’s degree in clinical psychology from Alliant International University, San Francisco, and has training in coaching from the Coaches Training Institute. She is also a certified practitioner of the MBTI (Myers Briggs Type Indicator).

Midday Mindfulness Meditation

Three sessions of guided mindfulness meditation — to help you manage stress and to promote well-being — open to beginners and experienced alike. Instructor: Neesha Patel, a psychologist and °ϲĻϢLA-certified mindfulness facilitator. New to the Staff and Faculty Health and Well-Being team, she has experience offering mindfulness and compassion cultivation training at °ϲĻϢSF and °ϲĻϢ Berkeley, and throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.

Classes will run from noon to 1 p.m. You must sign up for all four sessions, even if you know you will not be attending some of them.

  • Mondays, April 10 and 17 — Vanderhoef Studio Theatre,
  • Monday, April 24 — , west end of the arboretum.

Tai Chi

A four-week series on the meditative Chinese art of internal power. No experience necessary. Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes.

Classes will be held from 12:10 to 1 p.m. on four consecutive Wednesdays, April 19 and 26, and May 3 and 10, on the plaza in front of the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art.

Instructor: Daniel Pfister, head instructor at Davis Kung Fu, where he teaches students with all levels of experience. He is pursuing a graduate degree in exercise science.
