Peydro, a police dog with the Woodland Police Department, will be released today from the аÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÄÚÄ»ÐÅÏ¢ Davis veterinary hospital, where he has been treated since being critically injured nine days ago in the line of duty. Area police officers, including several K9 units, have been invited to escort Peydro from the hospital.

Peydro and his handler, Officer Juan Barerra of the Woodland Police Department; Maggie Knipe, a аÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÄÚÄ»ÐÅÏ¢ Davis veterinary neurologist and Peydro’s lead surgeon; Sgt. Frank Ritter of the Woodland Police Department, and representatives of the Foothills K9 Association.

Background:
Peydro was struck by a car during the early morning hours of Saturday, May 28, while attempting to apprehend a suspect in Woodland. He was immediately transported to the аÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÄÚÄ»ÐÅÏ¢ Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, where he underwent emergency facial and spinal surgery. During the procedure, two pins were placed in his vertebrae to stabilize the injury.
He has slowly been making progress and is now able to finish the remainder of his recovery at home with Officer Barerra.
Driving and parking directions:
- Take Interstate 80 to Highway 113 and drive north toward Woodland.
- Exit at the first opportunity onto Hutchison Drive.
- At the end of the off-ramp, turn right onto Hutchison.
- At the second traffic light, turn right onto La Rue Road.
- As La Rue starts to bend left, turn right onto Garrod Drive.
- Garrod will take you to a large parking lot, just east of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. To park free there, place a news media business card on the driver’s side of your vehicle’s dashboard.
- Enter the veterinary hospital from the north entry. Peydro will be discharged in the first floor lobby.
