Our community has been reeling since the first of these tragic events took place on April 27. In less than a week, three stabbings that resulted in two deaths have occurred in our normally quiet and peaceful town and there is a lot of anxiety on what this means and what will be done.
The safety of our residents and students is always our top priority. The Davis Police Department, аÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÄÚÄ»ÐÅÏ¢ Davis police and our national and regional law enforcement community have come together to assist, providing investigators, patrols, crime labs, staff and hours of time and energy to protect our community. From transitioning to remote nighttime instruction and maximizing Safe Ride escorts on the аÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÄÚÄ»ÐÅÏ¢ Davis campus to increasing patrols around parks and schools and providing shelter for our unhoused community in Davis, the city and аÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊÄÚÄ»ÐÅÏ¢ Davis have been tirelessly working to protect, shelter, care and listen.
We will continue the work and remain vigilant until these crimes have been resolved. In the meantime, we all must stay cautious and take precautions. We urge all residents, students and families to consider these tips:
- Avoid traveling alone after dark.
- Stay in well-lit areas as much as possible.
- Be aware of locations and situations that make you vulnerable to crime.
- Travel in groups and consider a buddy system.
- Walk confidently and at a steady pace, making eye contact with people while walking.
- Trust your instincts and avoid people and situations that make you nervous.
- If you feel you are in danger, call 9-1-1.
In addition, take time for your own mental health and check in on your family and children, your neighbors and friends.
Many words have been echoed this week and one that particularly resonates is resilience. Our community is strong. The spirit of Davis is vibrant, connected and robust. We will reclaim our community and campus, our parks and neighborhoods, our safety and peace of mind. This is still a wonderful city and university with amazing people who care and triumph over adversity. We will endure and we will emerge stronger.
Sincerely,
- Mayor Will Arnold
