Research Expo Shows 'Pathways to Impact'

Resources for researchers — services, facilities and programs — will be showcased during the annual Research Expo the first week of April. The sponsoring Office of Research has selected “Pathways to Impact” as this year’s theme, and, along that line, the program will include a panel discussion on “Maximizing Your Impact.”

The expo, also including research exhibits and three concurrent workshops, is for faculty, post-docs, staff, research administrators and students involved in research. Admission is free, lunch is provided — and sign-ups are underway (see registration link in box).

The expo will begin with the panel discussion 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., moderated by Cameron Carter, interim vice chancellor, Office of Research. The panelists: Ralph J. Hexter, provost and executive vice chancellor; Raissa D'Souza, professor, computer science, and mechanical and aerospace engineering; Kent Lloyd, associate director, Comprehensive Cancer Center; Jonna Mazet, director, One Health Institute; John Morrison, director, California National Primate Research Center; and Jan Nolta, director, Stem Cell Program.

Exhibit time (with lunch) is scheduled from 12:30 to 2 p.m. More than 40 units from across the Davis and Sacramento campuses are participating in the expo, along with the several programs within the Office of Research, among them: Corporate Relations, InnovationAccess, Institutional Review Board Administration, Interdisciplinary Research Support, Research Compliance and Integrity, Research Core Facilities and Venture Catalyst.

The workshops will be from 2 to 3 p.m.:

  • Impact through Policy, how to build connections and guide policy based on research —moderated by Austin Brown, director, Policy Institute for Energy, Environment and the Economy; and Amber Mace, deputy director, California Council on Science and Technology
  • Reproducibility of Research and Scientific Integrity, how to ensure reproducibility and scientific integrity of research — moderated by Simine Vazire, associate professor, Department of Psychology
  • Overview of the Research Project Life Cycle, including research proposal preparation and submission; award review and project compliance; accounting; and patents and licensing —with Craig Allison, director, research compliance; Lenora Bruce and Tammy Castelli, accountants, contracts and grants accounting; Yoke Dellenback, manager, contracts and grants, Social Science Research Service Center; and Grace Liu, associate director, sponsored programs (moderator).
