2 Elected to National Academy of Engineering

Quick Summary

  • NAE membership among highest honors for U.S. engineers
  • Deb Niemeier: Vehicle emissions, air quality and social justice
  • Ross Boulanger: How earthquakes affect soils and structures

Two engineering professors at the University of California, Davis, Deb Niemeier and Ross Boulanger, have been elected as members of the National Academy of Engineering, among the highest honors in the profession. Both are faculty members in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, College of Engineering.

鈥淭he academy鈥檚 induction of professors Boulanger and Niemeier shines a much deserved spotlight on their phenomenal work to make the world a better place,鈥 said Interim Chancellor Ralph J. Hexter. 鈥淭heir achievements exemplify the university鈥檚 public service commitment at its best, with discoveries that help us better understand and mitigate the effects of life-threatening earthquakes and air pollution in California and beyond.鈥

Niemeier
Niemeier

was recognized for 鈥渄eveloping groundbreaking tools to characterize the impact of transportation emissions on air quality and environmental justice.鈥 Her work combines studies of vehicle emissions, air quality, transportation modeling and the impacts of air pollution on communities. Niemeier is founding director of the at 新澳门六合彩内幕信息 Davis, former chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and former director of the at 新澳门六合彩内幕信息 Davis. She earned her bachelor鈥檚 degree in civil engineering from the University of Texas and her Ph.D. from the University of Washington.

Boulanger
Boulanger

was honored 鈥渇or contributions to geotechnical earthquake engineering and the development of procedures for evaluating seismic behavior of soil-structure systems.鈥 He studies how soils and structures on top of them, such as buildings, bridges and dams, respond to earthquakes. Boulanger is director of the 新澳门六合彩内幕信息 Davis , which uses a 60-foot centrifuge to simulate soil conditions during earthquakes. He earned his bachelor鈥檚 degree from the University of British Columbia, and master鈥檚 and Ph.D. degrees from 新澳门六合彩内幕信息 Berkeley.

鈥淭his is a first for our College of Engineering 鈥 two faculty members elected to the NAE in the same year,鈥 Dean Jennifer S. Curtis said. 鈥淲e are thrilled for professors Boulanger and Niemeier and extremely proud of their outstanding career accomplishments. They exemplify the exceptional quality of faculty throughout our college.鈥
