Spring Quarter Snapshot: Construction Continues

While most of us are staying home, construction continues around California — by virtue of an exemption in the governor’s executive order — including at The Green at West Village and elsewhere around the °ϲĻϢ Davis campus.

New drone video (above) shows progress on The Green, due to open in the fall with beds for 1,000 transfer students. With this new housing, °ϲĻϢ Davis will release its master leases on Davis apartments accommodating 500 transfer students — and thus boost the city’s stock of rental units.

But, wait, there’s more. A second phase of The Green will add 2,300 beds in the fall of 2021, just another part of the most ambitious student housing plan in °ϲĻϢ Davis history.

Construction companies working on campus must follow social distancing requirements, said Jim Carroll, university architect and associate vice chancellor, Design and Construction Management.

He said most of his staff members are working remotely, but visit their project sites to monitor ongoing construction.

Where the work is happening

Other building projects on which work continues include the Teaching and Learning Complex, Shasta Hall residence hall, Walker Hall, and the Briggs Hall and Chemistry Building renovations, along with a number of minor capital projects in building interiors.

In addition, work continues on the La Rue Road bridge replacement over the Arboretum Waterway, now due for completion by the start of fall quarter.

“We are also progressing our projects through the design phases, ensuring that when the campus goes back to normal operations, we are able to offer biddable project work to the construction community,” Carroll said.
