Death of a student
What happens to the Student Loan and other payments from us if a student dies.
If a current student dies, we need to know.
What happens to payments
If a borrower dies before they've paid off their Student Loan, any balance may be written off by Inland Revenue.
Any other payments they're getting will need to be stopped. If we're not told, a debt may be created for any overpayments.
How to tell us
You can email us or call us if a current student dies while they are getting Student Loan, Student Allowance or any other payments from us.
If the student has a Student Loan, you need to send us a copy of the death certificate. This can be done by either:
- logging in to Connect and uploading it, or
- posting it to us.
We'll send this to Inland Revenue so they can consider writing off the balance of the Student Loan. You will not need to send this if they do not have a Student Loan.
If a former student dies
If someone who was previously studying dies and they have an outstanding Student Loan balance, please contact Inland Revenue.
